Army Officer Career Progression Ppt – Marine medicine is undergoing many changes. We have a new surgeon general, a new corps chief, and a focus on readiness. With these changes comes a new career progression and path for a Medical Corps (MC) officer (PDF version, PPT version). Let’s take a look at the new model and discuss the impact it will have on you as your career progresses. We’ll start at the top of the slide and work our way down, breaking it down into activities for each MC employee.
What should the MC employee pay attention to in this section? You must have operational AND clinical experience to be competitive for advancement. The days of camping in military clearinghouses (MTFs) are over. Each should be operationally appropriate, consistent with recent changes to the O6 promotion committee convening procedure. This could be a surface unit, fleet marine force (FMF), submarine unit, air force, special operations, joint environment, expeditionary combat team, or any other operational environment you find. It doesn’t matter what and under what circumstances, but each must be operationally appropriate.

It simply determines your educational path. Practicing and becoming board certified is not a new concept or path for an MC employee. But what is new is the expectation that everyone will work in an operational role until they are promoted to O5 and in a senior operational role until they are promoted to O6. The concept that anyone can be an Operations Officer (OMO) is explained in detail at the bottom of the slide.

In addition to serving as an OMO, individuals who wish to serve in senior positions must complete Joint Professional Military Education I and II (JPME I/II) and obtain formal management or leadership training, such as a Master’s Degree in Education. Business Administration or related fields.
Action #2 – Start the JPME program now, if you haven’t already, and work out a strategy and timeline with your mentors to get a higher education.
The new SG is a strong supporter of high reliability and Navy Medicine is always committed to adopting the principles of the High Reliability Organization (HRO). Many of the activities listed on the career path slide are undergoing changes and updates to include high-impact education.
Sample assignments are divided into Fleet and Naval Training and Training Command/Unit (NMRTC/U) positions. They are also classified according to the typical degree of occurrence. These are general guidelines and variations are inevitable, so be flexible. We know, for example, that it takes at least seven years to become a neurosurgeon, so their path varies. There are other specialties in a similar situation that require long training. As a result, we ask each specialty leader to take this common career path and modify it for their specialty.

Another thing on this part of the slide is that you’re switching between operational and NMRTC/U assignments where you’re mostly in a clinical role, probably in the MTF. Your time at MTF will allow you to strengthen your personal clinical skills and contribute to our mission of graduate medical education. After this tour, return to the operational setup at the top station. Wash and repeat this pattern as your career progresses.
Activity #4 – Print the career path slide and get a red and black pen. Positions, roles and courses you have already completed in the Dark Circle. You can do whatever you want in the red circle. When it’s time for your next order, jump from where you are (Fleet or NMRTC/U) and aim for one of the positions on the right circled in red.

Most likely, my next career move will be to obtain a JPME II position or a degree in executive medicine as an executive officer (XO), as I am required to complete XO and command officer (CO) internships before I can move into senior leadership positions. .
