Meinke says she should have known before stepping into the role how often coding practices change. Although the broad framework of ICD-10 coding is relatively stable, there are common adjustments that coders must follow.
“Typically there are changes every year, so sometimes it can feel like you’re constantly relearning how things are coded,” Meinke said.
“Positively, I also want to know how many different possibilities there are through coding. If I had known, I would have liked to get into coding sooner.

There is an entire niche industry in the medical field related to medical records and clinical data—and the role of medical coding provides an excellent entry point.
“It’s surprising how specific the signs are,” Meinke said. “When translating documentation into codes, you have to pay close attention to detail because one missed detail can completely change the code, which is definitely a challenge.”

“It’s a lot less simplistic,” she said. Without coders, providers would have to do much more work to communicate with insurance companies — ultimately driving up the cost of services.
